The Central Bank is exclusively responsible for valuing and reimbursing banknotes and coins issued in Cabo Verde. 

Damaged or mutilated Cabo Verde Escudo banknotes (for example, partially burned, torn or deteriorated banknotes) that meet certain criteria are exchanged by Banco de Cabo Verde, free of charge, as long as there is no suspicion that the act was intentional. 

Banco de Cabo Verde may refuse the exchange if it has knowledge or a well-founded suspicion that a wrongdoing was committed or that the notes were intentionally mutilated or damaged. 

Banknotes are reimbursed in the following situations: 

Mutilated or damaged legal tender banknotes 
Banknotes withdrawn from circulation that remain legal tender 
Banknotes withdrawn from circulation that remain legal tender, when incomplete, deteriorated or fragmented

Principles for valuing banknotes at Banco de Cabo Verde 

1. The valuation of legal tender Banco de Cabo Verde banknotes that are mutilated or damaged obeys the following principles:  
a) It is valued as a complete note when it has a fragment with at least 60% of its total area and includes the upper or lower part of the note; 
b) It is valued as a complete note even if, while incomplete or fragmented, by juxtaposition of its fragments, it has at least 60% of the total area; 
c) It is valued as a complete note when it consists of fragments whose juxtaposition results in unequivocally and fully the same note; 
d) It is valued as half a note when it has a fragment with less than 60% of its total area, contains at least two complete security features, and the missing parts are proven to have been actually destroyed 

2. The valuation and exchange of genuine and damaged banknotes, withdrawn from circulation, which remain legal tender, obey the following principles: 
a) It is valued as a complete note when whole or made up of fragments whose juxtaposition results in exactly, unequivocally and fully the same note; 
b) It is valued as a complete note when, while incomplete, it has a fragment with at least 60% of its total area and includes a complete half of the note; 
c) It is valued as a complete note when, while incomplete and fragmented, by juxtaposition of its fragments, it has at least 60% of its total area; 
d) Half notes are not valued. 

To exchange a legal tender banknote that is mutilated/damaged or has been withdrawn from circulation, you must bring said note to a commercial bank.
