Statistics

Banco de Cabo Verde is responsible for the entire process of compiling monetary, financial, foreign exchange and external sector statistics.

The statistics produced by Banco de Cabo Verde are particularly relevant for the preparation of studies, estimates and forecasts about the Cabo Verdean economy, and they are widely disseminated online and in Statistical Bulletins and Reports.

Banco de Cabo Verde’s (BCV) statistical production is guided by the principles of impartiality, scientific independence, and statistical confidentiality. BCV maintains high quality standards in the production and dissemination of statistics, which is a determining factor in consolidating users' confidence in the statistics it produces.

Banco de Cabo Verde also publishes statistics of other entities, including public finance statistics produced by the Ministry of Finance and Planning and national accounts and inflation statistics produced by the National Statistics Institute.

Key Macroeconomic Indicators

The country's key macroeconomic indicators combine information produced by Banco de Cabo Verde, the National Statistics Institute and the Ministry of Finance.

National Accounts

National accounts statistics are compiled by the National Statistics Institute based on the United Nations System of National Accounts 1993.

The country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is calculated on a quarterly and annual basis, both in terms of production (sum of gross added value of economic activity) and in terms of expenditure (sum of private and public consumption, public and private investment and exports minus the country's imports).

Statistics are produced at current prices, chained prices and previous year’s prices, in million Cabo Verde escudos.

Inflation

The inflation statistics provided by Banco de Cabo Verde are compiled monthly by the National Statistics Institute. They comprise: monthly developments in the consumer price index; changes in the consumer price index over the past twelve months, and year-over-year changes in the consumer price index.

Monetary and Financial

Monetary statistics constitute a detailed set of flow and stock data relating to the financial and non-financial assets and liabilities of an economy's monetary financial institutions. The monetary and financial statistics compiled and disseminated by Banco de Cabo Verde include: the monetary survey, Banco de Cabo Verde’s analytical situation, commercial banks’ consolidated balance sheets, Banco de Cabo Verde’s reference interest rates, and the interest charged on banking transactions.

Foreign Exchange Statistics

Foreign exchange statistics are compiled by Banco de Cabo Verde from the euro reference rates calculated and provided by the European Central Bank. On a monthly basis, Banco de Cabo Verde publishes the monthly and end-of-period exchange rates of the Cabo Verde Escudo against the euro, British pound, US dollar, Danish krone, Swedish krona, Norwegian krone, Japanese yen, Swiss franc, South African Rand and Canadian Dollar. The nominal and real effective exchange rate indexes of the Cabo Verde Escudo are also compiled and published.

External Sector

External sector statistics include balance of payments (documents where transactions of real, financial and monetary assets carried out in the course of a quarter between residents and non-residents of an economy are systematically recorded) and international investment position (the balance of the economy’s foreign assets and liabilities, at the end of a quarter).

Statistics on migrants’ remittances and foreign trade are also provided.

Banco de Cabo Verde publishes information about public finance on its website and statistical bulletins, in particular on: General Government Financing and the Central Government’s Revenue and Expenses.
